mr tambourine man

I’ve decided to spend the rest of my week anytime I am at my desk listening to the entire Bob Dylan catalog available to me online. His stuff that get covered is great. Then, I also hear these fantastic obscure songs either in soundtracks or covered live that also belong to him. I always wonder why I don’t have any of his stuff. He’s not the only one. I should make a list and just do it with everyone I’ve ever wondered that same thing about.

A few songs in and I really understand the comparison’s that Adam Carroll gets to Dylan…more than Townes.

music stuff

well, Oklahoma wasn’t terribly spectacular but they have amassed a fine little riverwalk with shops and restaurants and bars. It’s no San Antonio but hey there was also no crowd. I was a little disappointed that there was no one I wanted to see at the Wormy Dog Saloon. Sometime I catch a show there. I am planning to go back in early August for a Blue Door show.

I didn’t take a single picture.

Here’s my offering for a few favorite bands around town in the next few days or so. It’s susan loaded because…well because she’s my favorite and she’s “schlepping” her new cd all over town. Of course it’s not intended to be a great big all encompassing list, just those I like to recommend.

a review of Outerspace

I don’t think I’d make a good reviewer. You have to have the ability to write critically and I just don’t have the skills. But, I’ll tell you Susan’s cd is exceptional. ..so here’s my amateurish review.

In Outerspace, songwriter Susan Gibson has found a cd that is travelling in the same direction as her unique personal style. Using skillful and mature variations in the delivery of each song, it stands out like the songwriter herself, being unique in some ways and traditional in others. Her second solo effort is packed full of a variety of styles from country to folk to simple down home roots-rock. She’ll even tell about her Methodist rap song in her introduction to “No Fair”, sure to come with “potato chips sprinkled on top”. With the addition of some ethereal qualities like the ones found on “Still Time”, it is suitable to represent the title, Outerspace. She is even bold enough to experiment. While it is not this reviewers favorite result, she gets points for keeping true to her own creative vision. This is her most collaborative project to date with cowriters like Jim Lauderdale, “Happiest When I’m Moving”; Randy Scruggs, “Upon Re-entry” and others. A live version of “Wide Open Spaces”, penned by Gibson and made one of the most recognized country songs of all times by the Dixie Chicks is included.

 whatever, i tried.

Shawn Mullins

On Friday, I finally had the chance to see Shawn Mullins live.
It was great to get the chance to see him in person. There is a satisfying moment to hear your favorite songs played live. But one I only get from small concert venues.

A guy named Eddie Elliot opened and I enjoyed him as well.

I spent the early part of this week in Kerrville and Houston. A small trip for work and to take in a small portion of the HOV II Tour ( Susan, Walt, Brandon). The show in Houston was at the Mucky Duck. It’s a great venue for live music. It makes the top of my list of great listening places to see music in Texas. I will get pictures up as soon as I am done renovating the website.

While in Houston, I did try for a few hours to locate my brother but that’s another story. I also took a trip down memory lane and went by the old house. I always feel the need when I am there…just to make sure the place is still where we left it I guess. The house is currently for sale.

My parents built in 1976 for $17,000. Almost 3000 square feet and what was once almost 2 acres of land. I thought about what it might be like to buy it. If Houston wasn’t the armpit of Texas, I might even think about it seriously. It takes days to get the petroleum smell out of my hair and clothes. But the nostalgia of it, to have the house I grew up in again and walk the same hall; flush the same weak toilet; feel the cool brown ceramic tile under my feet; brush my hands over the ridges of spanish stucco and stand under the archways. And, to have the garage apartment with the orange cone wood burning fire place and kitchenette where I used to image I’d live one day when I was older. That apartment is where we lived until the house was finished and where my mother tumbled down the stairs while pregnant with my brother. It has been my running joke for years about what wrong with him. If I weren’t cranky I’d feel whimsical.

Tonight I go to a musical…

looking forward to the music

I’ve been a bit depressed by the internet lately. The thing about learning new things is also learning how much you don’t know. And, I am an infant baby.

But, there is some exciting music options to keep my spirits up this month. I will finally realize a long desire to see Shawn Mullins live and Edie Carey returns to this part of the country again later in the month. It’s nice to have a folk influx from the east especially since this will be the second Kerrville in a row that I will miss. Don’t get me wrong but one can not live on Texas music alone.

This month also features another HOV tour with Walt, Susan and Brandon in which I will take at least a few days to follow them around.

Some of my other projects are falling away from my attention too. I know I need to focus on at least one soon. Well, hey, I at least made the time to try and create something here.
